Garden competition launched

GREEN fingered residents are being urged to enter a competition to celebrate Britain In Bloom.

More than £1,000 worth of prizes are available for The Solihull In Bloom Floral Garden

It is open to residents (for hanging baskets or front gardens), retail and commercial frontages, school gardens, ‘community involvement and pubs, restaurants and hotels. Enter here.

The town has made it through to the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom 2010 final for the 'Best City' category.

Judging will take place in July for the regional Heart of England in Bloom contest and August for the national Britain in Bloom final.

The judges will be taken on a three-and-a-half hour journey through the borough.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council – which is co-ordinating activities – plans to celebrate with a six-foot pyramid at a chess board in Mell Square.

The £11,000 scheme has angered some who see it as a waste of cash for the cash-strapped authority.

The authority is also cleaning up the borough with volunteer ‘Environmental Champions’.

A clean-up of a pond in Sandhills Crescent, Widney Manor even recovered a space hopper toy.
