He received a suspected neck injury at about 1pm, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

A spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a boy, believed to be ten years old, who was already receiving excellent care from first aid staff on site.

“The boy suffered a suspected neck injury during a tackle whilst playing rugby.

“Crews assessed the boy’s condition and immobilised him with a neck collar and spinal board.

“Due to the nature of his injury and his age, crews decided to take him to Birmingham Children’s Hospital by air for further treatment.”

No further details were available at the time of going to press.
