Parking changes at Mell Square

DRIVERS using Mell Square car park will have to pay on arrival instead of on exit because of vandalism to ticket machines.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council said motorists will have to pay and display from February 1.

At the moment, drivers take a ticket when they enter and pay for the time they have stayed when they leave.

The machines will accept cash and cards and drivers can also pay by mobile phone.

Those who overstay risk being slapped with a ticket by council parking wardens.

Cabinet member for transport and highways Ted Richards said: “Because our machines in Mell Square car park have been vandalised recently, it seems a sensible time to make the change to pay and display, rather than simply replace the pay on foot machines, with a risk that it will happen again.

“The pay and display system will give people a choice of ways to pay, including topping up their stay by mobile phone, which is very convenient and hopefully help people avoid getting a ticket for overstaying."
