Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council said the facility cost £11,535 a year but was used by about two families a day.

A final decision will be taken next week and the facilities will then close later this year. No date has been given by the Conservative-run council.

Cabinet member for community services Kate Wild said: “This was a very difficult decision to make and I am disappointed to be in the position of having to take it.

“Use of the crèche at Tudor Grange has been consistently low over the past 18 months and sadly does not support the continued provision of the facility.”

Tory Meriden MP Caroline Spelman said she was concerned families would miss out on keeping fit but the number of users is “really not viable”.

She said: “Once again, it’s a case of use it or lose it.

“So I appeal to all mums and dads who can, to make use of these facilities, because it makes no sense for the council to spend taxpayers’ money on under-used facilities that could be better used to support other services in the Borough.”
