Weather hits fun run entries

KNOWLE Fun Run entries are down so far this year because of the cold weather, ogranisers have said.

Yet they hope warmer temperatures and a new offer of a free mug for entrants will boost entries for the Sunday May 12 event, the 30th in its history.

About 700 people have signed up for the main run compared to 950 at the same time in the previous three years.

About 50 have signed up for the mini-run, down 40 on the previous three years.

Co-ordinator Lion Noel Kinahan said: “Recent snowfalls have prevented runners getting out on the streets to train, but we hope that we shall see a change in the weather which will bring about an increase in entries over the rest of the Easter holiday.

“We are again grateful to all the sponsors and advertisers in the Fun Run programme for covering all the increasing costs of staging the event, which means that all entry fees, donations and sponsorship made by runners will go to our very worthy nominated charities – Marie Curie Big Build, AgeUK Solihull, St Basils and local causes.

“Any runners wishing to get their run sponsored for other charities may also do so.”

Hunters estate agents – the main sponsor – aren to provide a mug for every runner who completes the course.

Director David Hofton said: “We are delighted to have supported the Lions in making such a huge success.

“I understand the Fun Run has raised well over £500,000 for charity in the 17 years we have been the main sponsor.

“We provided medals for the 21st & 25th Fun Runs, but decided to do something different this year and give runners a memento to take home that they will use rather than put in a drawer.”
