A PART time 20mph speed limit is to be introduced on Station Road in Knowle by Arden School.The move by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council comes after it agreed in September to install a £90,000 road hump scheme to further slow traffic.
Two objections opposed the speed limit change, which will cost £7,000 to install flashing signs and road markings.
A council report says: “Both objections consider that road humps are not effective in reducing vehicle speeds but cause congestion and fuel wastage due to speeding up and slowing down vehicles.
“The objectors also consider that traffic speeds are already acceptably low due to congestion at school run times.”
But officers said “it would be inappropriate to introduce the 20mph without the vertical measures to better ensure enforcement”.
It said: “It is recognised that there will be some negative impact on the local environment as a
result of introduction of the proposals.”
But it said the scheme will encourage people to get out of cars. “It is considered that these benefits outweigh the disadvantages of environmental impact and visual intrusion.”
The authority previously wanted to add new cycle routes in Knowle Park but the plan was dropped after an outcry.
