Gypsy plan slammed

A BID to increase the number of legal gypsy sites in Solihull has been slammed by council chiefs.

The Government has told councils to find places it would give planning permission to for legal sites. This is a bid to stop un-authorised camps.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council had backed 26 more caravan pitches to 2017 – but regional chiefs say it should take two more from Stratford.

This is because of a planned new rule which states a drop in numbers in one area must be taken up by another.

A council report says the “suggestion of pitch ‘trade-offs’ between local authorities is
not an appropriate or justified way of meeting the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers”.

This does address the need to provide places in some authorities more than others, it states. No locations have been agreed for where the sites will be.

And it says: “Solihull has made a greater degree of provision to date than many other local authorities, including Stratford.”

It adds that early figures of a further 22 pitches from 2017 to 2027 is “based on a simple numerical extrapolation, rather than robust evidence”.
