Recycling increasing in Solihull

RECYCLING targets are being exceeded by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council after it introduced a range of home collection bins and boxes.

From July to September borough homes recycled 6.08 per cent of waste against a target of 5.85 per cent.

A new black box for glass, tins and cans has driven the rate up, the council says in a report. Better training and staff procedures had helped, it added.

A further receptacle, a white woven bag for plastic bottles and cans “should further enhance performance of non bio-degradable materials” it added.

It has to recycle 7.7 per cent by March next year. It will get £497,696 in "reward funding" if this is achieved

Some residents have complained of a confusing array of kerbside recycling arrangements.

Homes have two bins, one for garden and one for general waste, two boxes for paper and card and for glass, tins and cans and now the white sack.
