Driver rescued from ford
A DRIVER was rescued from a Knowle ford by firefighters.
Crews were called to Elvers Green Lane, Knowle, Solihull at 8pm.

Horse rescued from canal
A HORSE was rescued from a canal in Hockley Heath.
Firefighters were called to the Stratford-Upon-Avon Canal on Saturday at about 5.30pm.
They used a 30m line and slings to rescue the horse at about 6.10pm, West Midlands Fire Service said.

Woman freed from overturned car
A WOMAN was trapped after her vehicle overturned in Solihull town centre.
Fire crews cut the woman free following in New Road at about 2.38pm on Wednesday, West Midlands Fire Service said.
She suffered minor injuries.

Knowle school evacuated in fire alert
ARDEN School in Knowle was evacuated this morning after a fire, The Birmingham Mail reports.
Family rescued from house fire
A FAMILY were rescued by firefighters from a house blaze in Solihull in the early hours of this morning.
Two adults and two children were taken from the detached house in Marshall Lake Road at 12.48am.
A five-year-old boy was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital. Other family members went to hospital for precautionary checks.
A West Midlands Fire Service statement said three crews “discovered a severe fire which had destroyed a first floor front bedroom, spread to the roof space and caused approximately 40 percent damage to the remainder of the first floor”.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to tackle the blaze.
The fire service said an investigation is underway.

Hockley Heath house damaged by fire

A HOUSE in Hockley Heath was severely damaged by fire.Crews were called to the detached house, Saxonhurst, on the Stratford Road, at about 12.30pm on Friday.
West Midlands Fire Service did not report any injuries.

Fire at Solihull hair salon
A SOLIHULL hair salon was damaged by fire today. 
No-one was injured in the blaze at Regis Hairstylists in Drury Lane, which started at about 9am.
Tape was placed around the salon by fire crews and the shop appeared to be badly damaged inside.
A sign is directing customers at the firm's outlet in nearby House of Fraser.
Solihull Fire Station was not available for comment.

Report warns of rich and poor gap
UNACCEPTABLE gaps between rich and poor exist in Solihull, council inspectors found – but many services were giving “good results”.
The Audit Commission study assessed Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, the local NHS and West Midlands Fire Service.
The council was rated two out of a maximum four for managing services and three for financial management. The fire authority got three for both.
The report shows the borough:
● Has ore than double the number of “black minority ethnic” people, 9.4 per cent, compared to the 2001 census.
● Enjoys a “strong economy” where “employment is high and people earn above average wages”.
● Has healthy residents, with high life expectancy.
● But there is a “big split” between rich and poor, one of the largest in the UK.
● “Relatively low” crime rates but this is still higher than similar areas.
● Average levels of concern about crime.
● Public services such as NHS and councils which “work well together and deliver good results, results the public is noticing”.
● They are “responding well to the recession” by working with businesses.
● There is “inequality in performance between the pupils from the more “disadvantaged areas of the borough compared to the more affluent areas”.
Councillor Ken Meeson, leader of the council, said in a press release: “It is a positive endorsement of all the work we are doing, and proof that we are moving in the right direction.”
Chief Fire Officer Vijith Randeniya, also said: “There have been a number of improvements in the way we work as an organisation and how we work with our partners and this is now having a positive effect.”
