Parking permits introduced after 10 year battle
RESIDENTS’ parking permits were introduced to four streets this week in a bid to deter Widney Manor station commuters – after 10 years of battling and thousands of council cash.Only permits can be used from 9am to 11am and from 2pm to 3pm Monday to Friday in Austcliff Drive, Kilsby Grove, Sevington Close and Thorngrove Avenue.
The move, in the Hillfield area by the station, will cost Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council £4,000 with the permits costing £20.
Since 2000 the council has prepared 15 reports on the plans.
A report says: “During the period since October 2000, there have been two public exhibitions, three public meetings, and four separate consultations with residents in the area.
“The officer time in developing proposals, undertaking consultations, analysing results, attending public meetings and exhibitions and preparing reports amounts to an estimated 80 weeks, which has cost the service around £50,000.”

Fewer units for business park
A SOLIHULL business park has been given another seven years to expand – but fewer buildings are expected on the site.A developer were given seven years by councillors in 2002 to come up with detailed plans for Solihull Business Park in Monkspath Hall Road.
Yet they now say they need more time to submit the plans and proposed buildings will be seven instead of 11. See a map here.
Two blocks at the entrance, opposite the former UCI cinema, have been built with a further inside the site and permission is already in place for a car showroom next to them.
Developer David Ward will give further cash for roadworks to cope with the extra traffic.
Four letters opposed the plan. Complaints include fears the area is overdeveloped, ‘horrific’ traffic and affect on neighbouring properties. Buildings would be 18m high.
Yet Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s planning committee backed a planning officer’s recommendation that the plan be approved this week.
The officer’s report says the development ‘would make a significant contribution towards the
provision of the Borough’s employment land portfolio’.
Buildings will ‘respect the character and appearance of the surrounding area, whilst being well separated from nearby dwellings’.
It said highway works and a ‘travel plan’ will ‘enable mitigation of the proposal caused through increased traffic’.
