Notcutts raiders escape jail
FIVE people who stole thousands of pounds worth of Christmas goods from Notcutts Garden Centre have been spared jail, The Birmingham Mail reports.

Police 'smash fuel theft syndicate'
POLICE say they have busted a fuel theft ‘syndicate’ suspected of hitting three petrol stations dubbed the ‘Shirley triangle’.Officers believe a stolen Mercedes was used about 30 times to full up and then drive off with hundreds of pounds worth of fuel.
They said the vehicle had 12 large fuel tanks in the boot and rear footwells.

Latest pothole repair schedule
POTHOLES left by the recent snow will this week be filled in at locations including Knowle, Hockley Heath and Solihull.
Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has announced where its teams will be from today.
It will include the A4141 in Knowle, which runs from junction 5 of the M42 to its junction with the Birmingham Road, past Wroxall.
The council did not say which sections would be filled.
The locations are:
A452 Collector Road
A34 Stratford Road, Shirley
A3400 Stratford Road, Hockley Heath
A41 Warwick Road, Solihull
A4141 Knowle (
B4102 Hampton-in-Arden/ Catherine-de-Barnes
B4101 Spencers Lane/ Tanners Lane

Hit-and-run in Shirley
A 59-year-old woman suffered serious head injuries in a hit-and-run collision in Shirley.
She was struck by a VW Gold in Baywell Close at about 4.06pm yesterday.
She is in a serious condition in hospital, police said in a press release.
Anyone with information should contact police at Solihull on 0845 113 5000.
* A 30-year old man was later arrested in connection with the incident.

Shoplifters banned from Dorridge and Solihull
TWO “prolific” shoplifters have been banned from Dorridge, Solihull and Shirley by the courts.
Christopher Mann and Mark Thomas were banned until late 2011 through a Criminal Anti-Social Behaviour Order.
In a press release, West Midlands Police said Mann had 42 shoplifting convictions and Thomas had 35.
The CRASBO bans Mann from Shirley and Dorridge until November 23 2011 and Thomas from Solihull town centre until October 22 2011.
Sergeant Julian Powell said: “These banning orders will put retailers' minds at rest and make our shopping centres a safer, more pleasant place for people to visit.”
He said: “Courts don't issue CRASBOs lightly – they are a powerful deterrent.”
Sgt Powell added: “If they are foolish enough not to comply with the orders they will be arrested, put before the courts, and face the likelihood of a custodial sentence.”
Photographs and the CRASBO terms will be given to shops, police said.
The orders differ from anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) as they are handed down by a court after someone is convicted of a criminal offence.
People can be given ASBOs without committing a criminal offence, such as being a persistent nuisance.
Breaches of either order is a criminal offence and a CRASBO can lead to five years in prison.

Shirley restaurant fined over salmonella
A SHIRLEY restaurant owner has been ordered to pay £2,615 after a customer ended up in hospital with salmonella.
She was taken ill last year four days after eating a hot buffet lunch from The Fortune Inn, Stratford Road.
Four other customers were ill and officers found the bug on a cleaning cloth 15 days after she complained.
Owner Pak Fair Chu pleaded guilty to four charges when taken to court by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. He was fined and ordered to pay costs.
A council press release said this “included failing to ensure that food was fit for human consumption and failing to ensure the correct procedure for cleaning cloths was implemented”.
It said: “Officers visited the Fortune Inn on 1 August, by which time the woman had been admitted to hospital with what was later discovered to be the rare strain of food poisoning salmonella menhaden.
“In a further visit to the eatery made by the council, samples were taken from foodstuffs and cleaning materials, which were then tested.
“A sample from a cleaning cloth was found to match the type of salmonella the woman had suffered and had still been present on the cloth 15 days after the original complaint.
“There had also been four other customers complaining of being ill after eating at the Fortune Inn.”
Deputy council leader Councillor Bob Sleigh said: “This case highlights the excellent work done by our food safety team, whose prompt and effective response to the initial complaint potentially stopped many other people falling ill.”

Two new dental practices for NHS
TWO new NHS dental practices are to be set up in Balsall Common and Shirley.One practice will open next year in the new Balsall Common Health Centre with the other one at a location to be chosen in Shirley.
A statement from Solihull Care Trust said: “The trust is keen to encourage people to achieve better oral health by seeing an NHS dentist.
“A regular check-up is essential even for people without their own teeth in order to ensure they have a healthy mouth.”
More people were now able to see a dentist, it said. It comes as the trust revealed Knowle has amongst the worst access to NHS dentistry in the borough.
In a statement, Marcus Woof, trust associate director of dentistry, said: “Our plans to improve dental and oral health in Solihull mean that dental check-ups are available to all.
“These two new practices will help us achieve that aim."

Free number plate screws in Shirley tomorrow
DRIVERS are urged to get free tamper-proof screws tomorrow deter number plate thieves.Motorists can get the screws, worth £14, from Halfords in Chalford Way, Shirley at the weekend (Nov 28-29) from 10am to 4pm.
Police said the screws cannot be turned and staff will fix them to vehicles.
West Midlands Police Sergeant Tim Evans, said: “Number plates are easy to steal; once stolen they're often affixed to other vehicles which are then used to facilitate crime, especially driving off from petrol stations without paying.
“And with fuel prices increasing we expect this type of crime to increase, and with it the demand for stolen registration plates.
“Victims are left with the inconvenience and cost of replacing the plates.
“However, prevention is easy and we hope lots of motorists take advantage of the chance to get the anti-theft screws fitted free of charge.”
More than 1,700 such thefts have been recorded in the West Midlands in the last six months.

Tragic flying couple "unlawfully killed"
