Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council spoke out after its road safety budget was slashed by 40 per cent for next year.

A council report says: “It seems likely in the short term that there will be less safety camera enforcement activity, potentially there is a risk that the use of road safety cameras will come to an end in the near future.”

Station Road closure for Knowle speed hump

STATION Road in Knowle will be closed for a week next month so a traffic hump can be installed by Arden School – but a speed limit cut is on hold.

The hump will be installed on the pedestrian crossing outside the school during a closure from Tuesday April 6 to Monday April 12.

Only residents will be allowed into Station Road from its junction with Widney Road to St Lawrence Close.

Speed limit cut in Knowle

THE speed limit is to be cut to 50mph on part of the Warwick Road in Knowle.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has made an order to reduce the speed limit by 10mph from past the junction with Watery Lane to past Netherwood Lane and Oldwich Lane.

Speed limit cut for Stratford Road

THE speed limit on the Stratford Road into Hockley Heath is to be cut to 40mph.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has made an order to make the stretch between Box Trees Road to north of the village centre 40mph.

And the Old Warwick Road will also be made 40mph from its junction with the Stratford Road for about 175m.

More of the road will be 40mph if Warwickshire County Council, responsible for this section, agrees to cut the speed limit.

THE speed limit through Balsall Common was cut to 30mph yesterday.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council made the order the reduce the limit of the A452.

20mph limit passed for Station Road, Knowle

A PART time 20mph speed limit is to be introduced on Station Road in Knowle by Arden School.

The move by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council comes after it agreed in September to install a £90,000 road hump scheme to further slow traffic.

Two objections opposed the speed limit change, which will cost £7,000 to install flashing signs and road markings.

A council report says: “Both objections consider that road humps are not effective in reducing vehicle speeds but cause congestion and fuel wastage due to speeding up and slowing down vehicles.

“The objectors also consider that traffic speeds are already acceptably low due to congestion at school run times.”

But officers said “it would be inappropriate to introduce the 20mph without the vertical measures to better ensure enforcement”.

It said: “It is recognised that there will be some negative impact on the local environment as a
result of introduction of the proposals.”

But it said the scheme will encourage people to get out of cars. “It is considered that these benefits outweigh the disadvantages of environmental impact and visual intrusion.”

The authority previously wanted to add new cycle routes in Knowle Park but the plan was dropped after an outcry.

Solihull by-pass speed limit faces cut

THE speed limit on the Solihull by-pass faces being cut from 70mph to 50mph under new plans.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council is to consult on reducing the national speed limit section between M42 junction 5 and the 40mph section of the by-pass (map).

This would include the junction 5 roundabout.

All English councils have been told by the Government to review speed limits on A and B roads.

A council report says: “Reduction in vehicle speeds contributes to safer and healthier communities.

“Reducing the speed of traffic will bring environmental benefits to local communities through the reduction perceptions of danger.”
