College praised over 'stereotypical' female careers

FEMALE students at Solihull College still make ‘stereotypical’ career choices but efforts are being made to raise their aspirations, an inspection has found.

The college was praised by Ofsted for tackling young women’s underachievement.

In a letter to the college it said: “Overall, your work on promoting the achievement of young women and in developing their future economic well-being is good.

“Most young women still make stereotypical choices in terms of their courses and careers.

“However, within this context, confident and articulate young women make informed
choices about career opportunities.”

It said the college, which has campuses in Blossomfield Road in the town and north of the borough, is ‘highly effective’ in helping women progress.

This means it ‘raises the aspirations of young women from differing backgrounds’.

Areas for improvement are to recruit more women onto computing, construction, engineering and public services programmes and further develop links with schools.

This will “increase girls’ and young women’s awareness of the full range of academic and vocational courses and career opportunities”.
