Bid to re-open Knowle off licence

A BID has been made to re-open Wine Rack in Knowle as an off licence.

Andrew John Harris has applied to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council for a licence to sell alcohol at the Station Road premises.

He wants to open from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 11pm, Friday to Saturday from 10am to midnight and Sunday from 10am to 10pm.

It closed when parent firm First Quench went into administration in November. This saw Threshers in Dorridge and Bentley Heath close.

Bid to re-open Bentley Heath Threshers

A BID has been made to re-open Threshers off licence in Bentley Heath.

An application has been made to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council to open from 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 10.30pm on Sundays.

The store closed along with others throughout the UK after owners First Quench went under.

Threshers in Dorridge also closed but has re-opened as a ‘new’ Threshers. Wine Rack, also owned by the firm, closed in Knowle.

'Upmarket' coffeehouse plan for Hockley Heath

A NEW ‘upmarket’ coffeehouse and bakery is hoping to sell wine in Hockley Heath.

An application has been made for 2404 Stratford Road in Hockley Heath to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council.

It says: “A new upmarket coffeehouse/bakery offering fine wine as an accompaniment to food, and the opportunity to purchase the bottles as gifts.

“To operate Monday to Saturday 0830 to 1900 and Sunday 0830 to 1600.”

Burger King's 24/7 airport booze bid

BURGER King at Birmingham International Airport is bidding to sell alcohol 24/7.

Franchise firm SSP Air Limited has applied to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council for a premises licence.

Its application states: “Sale by retail of alcohol for consumption on & off the premises 24 hours a day 7 days a week and late night refreshment from 23:00 - 05:00 each day.”

Taxis seized over bald tyres

POLICE took 14 taxis off the road over two days with faults including bald tyres and no headlights.

Solihull police checked about 100 taxis over Christmas in the town centre and found ‘serious faults’ with 14, including low tyre treads. A further 13 had minor faults.

And three drivers had their benefits frozen and are being investigated for fraud as a result of the crackdown, which used random stop inspections and scheduled appointments.

Acting Traffic Sergeant Martin Williams said in a press release: “A balding tyre may sound innocuous but at this time of year, given the hazardous driving conditions, it's one of the most serious defects a car can have.

“It's frightening seeing some drivers, whose cars are running on bald tyres, struggling to maintain control.”

He said of the appointments, at Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, the licensing authority: “Bizarrely, even some of these turned up with defective vehicles.”

Councillor Mrs Diana Holl-Allen, cabinet member for safer communities, said: “We will continue to work together and to raise standards within the taxi trade for the benefit of the travelling public, and also for the good reputation of the many licensed drivers who do a good job and who offer a valuable service.”

Super casino bid begins

THE starting gun has been fired in a bid to bring a ‘super casino’ to Solihull.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council is inviting firms to bid for one large casino licence. The public can comment on draft criteria for the casino.

It says: “No specific site has been identified as the preferred location for a new casino premises.

“The council will expect those who wish to operate the facility, to nominate their own preferred location and support their nomination with evidence of how best such a development would meet the regeneration needs of the borough.”

The council says its responsibility is to stop gambling ‘from being a source of crime and disorder’ and ensure it is ‘conducted in a fair and open way’.

It also has to ‘protect children and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by gambling’.

The borough is one of eight areas set to get a casino.

The National Exhibition Centre has already said it will bid for the licence with a £90m scheme.
