Poppy tin thief jailed
A THIEF who stole poppy appeal tins on Armistice Day has been jailed.
Andrew Powers stole two Royal British Legion collection tins less than 10 minutes after the national minutes silence in Balsall Common.
Powers, from Stetchford, went into the HSBC bank at 11.10am under the premise of setting up a new account.
When the clerk left to find an advisor the 29-year-old put the poppy tin containing about £100 under his jacket and left.
The second donation box, containing about £20, was taken from the Dry Cleaners and Dress Agency in Station Road.
Powers, 29, admitted two charges of theft and was jailed for 17 weeks, West Midlands Police said in a press release.
Investigating officer, PC George Stokes, said: “These incidents took place shortly after the two minutes' silence…that's what makes them so distasteful and so desperate.
“The offender obviously thought these charity boxes were easy targets, but he was quickly identified from CCTV footage and picked up by officers.”

Speed limit cut in Balsall Common
THE speed limit through Balsall Common was cut to 30mph yesterday.
Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council made the order the reduce the limit of the A452.
Other limits have been cut to 40mph and 50mph. Click here for full details.

Two injured in Balsall Common smash
TWO men suffered serious injuries in a collision between two cars in Kenilworth Road, Balsall Common last night.
A Nissan Serena was in collision with a Mercedes E280. Police were called at 1.15am.
One car hit a wall, police said. A press release did not say which car this was.
It said: “Two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries. One suffered facial wounds, while the other suffered leg and arm injury.
“The road was closed at Patrick's island while emergency crews attended the scene. Traffic was diverted along the B4102.”

Two new dental practices for NHS
TWO new NHS dental practices are to be set up in Balsall Common and Shirley.One practice will open next year in the new Balsall Common Health Centre with the other one at a location to be chosen in Shirley.
A statement from Solihull Care Trust said: “The trust is keen to encourage people to achieve better oral health by seeing an NHS dentist.
“A regular check-up is essential even for people without their own teeth in order to ensure they have a healthy mouth.”
More people were now able to see a dentist, it said. It comes as the trust revealed Knowle has amongst the worst access to NHS dentistry in the borough.
In a statement, Marcus Woof, trust associate director of dentistry, said: “Our plans to improve dental and oral health in Solihull mean that dental check-ups are available to all.
“These two new practices will help us achieve that aim."
