SOLIHULL’S household recycling rate leapt from 33 per cent to 40 per cent last year, new figures show.

It follows the introduction of more recycling containers to homes to take card, cans and plastic bottles.
The latest figure, for 2009/10, puts Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council above the Government’s 40 per cent recycling target.
The move has proved controversial with some, however, as recycling is collected fortnightly and waste left outside black wheelie bins is not collected.
Council cabinet member for environment, Councillor Tim Hodgson said: “This is fantastic news and is a real testament to the hard work and enthusiasm of residents in recycling as much of their waste as possible.
“We are currently on target to reach 42 per cent of waste being recycled or composted in this financial year and we have aspirations to increase this to 60 per cent and beyond by 2020.”
The council was 151st out of 358 councils for the amount of household waste recycled. The top performing was Staffordshire Moorlands District Council at 61.8 per cent.
