As previously reported by The Silhillian, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has moved to simplify collections after a review branded arrangements ‘confusing’.
The current scheme, introduced in September 2009, has glass, cans and plastic collected one week and paper, card and plastic the next. But these will now be collected on one day.
Corrugated cardboard and more plastics, such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and fruit punnets, will also be collected for the first time.
Cans and tins will need to be put in the white sack rather than the black box, which will be for glass only. General waste will still be collected every week.
In January, a council report said residents were ‘often confused’ what to put out and when and this led to a ‘large number’ of calls to the authority.
The council says the changes will save it £157,000 towards a £15.2m savings target this year.
A new calendar will be sent out.
Councillor Kate Wild, cabinet member for community services, said: “Solihull’s residents already do an excellent job of recycling – around 43 per cent of the waste produced across the borough in fact – but they have asked us to help them recycle more.
“We’ve listened to their feedback and from September there will be extra materials that they can recycle.”
