The 69-year-old’s Ford Focus hit the tree in Prospect Lane, Solihull yesterday at about 9.40am.
It was travelling towards Streetsbrook Road, West Midlands Police said. The man is still in hospital.
Witnesses are asked to call the road policing unit at Solihull police station on 0845 113 5000.
