Knowle extension to fill High Street gap

A KNOWLE bakery has been given permission to expand despite concerns it will restrict a view of the village church.

The single-storey extension to Bread Collection will fill the gap between the store and Cara Mia shoes.

Members of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s planning committee backed a recommendation from a planning officer.

This said the extension “is not expected to have an undue detrimental impact upon the special architectural or historic interest of the listed building or its setting, the character and appearance of the conservation area or public and highway safety”.

The application states the extension would not ‘totally block’ views of the church and allow ‘glimpses’.

A bid for a two-storey extension was withdrawn in 2008.

Two objections were received, including one the Council for British Archaeology.

They said the proposal will block a right of way use for more than 45 years, leading to further on street parking. The bakery said only the site owners could use the access.

There was concern the plan is “detrimental to streetscape” and would have an “impact upon the fabric of a listed building”.

Cara Mia wrote on Twitter today: "Dammit! Thats my shop he's building against... there goes the easy access to my parking spaces!"
