Arden bids to keep classrooms

TEMPORARY classrooms at Arden School in Knowle should be in place for another six months, the school says – after planning bosses said they should be torn down.

The school says the three blocks of classrooms fronting Station Road must stay to July 31 to allow students to study for examinations.

It last month failed to get permission to keep the classrooms – set up in the mid 1990s – to December 31 2011.

It faces having them removed by the end of April – but has won the support of a council planning officer in its call for them to stay to July 31.

It says a fire in two other mobile classrooms had hit lessons and the classrooms are needed for studies.

A council report says: “To remove them before the end of the school year could impact upon the continuity of education at a vital time of the year in the run up to examinations.”

Members of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s planning committee were due to make a decision on removal this week but the matter was withdrawn.

Chairman Stuart David said: "The report was commissioned to try to find a pragmatic solution to what has become a sensitive and controversial matter.

"However, I feel we can, and should, go forward with fuller knowledge of both the history and the options available to us on the basis of dialogue between all interested parties.

"To that end, the council will instigate and facilitate discussion and I will ensure that a comprehensive report is brought back to this Committee in a timely manner."

The plan to keep the classrooms to 2011 failed as SMBC said “it has not been demonstrated that justification for the continued educational requirement for the classrooms of sufficient weight to outweigh the impact the mobile classrooms have on the visual character and appearance of the area”.

The school had previously been told to close the classrooms within six months of its new sixth form opening.

It opened in October 2009 but the school said it needed the blocks for two more years as the sixth form was not big enough.

A report on alleged breaches of planning rules will be brought before the committee, a report to Wednesday’s meeting was told.
