BNP to fight council elections

THE British National Party will again try to win seats on Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council at next month’s elections.

The party has fielded 16 candidates out of 17 possible seats, including Knowle, Dorridge and Hockley Heath and Silhill for the May 6 poll.

It beat Labour and the Greens to come third in Dorridge and Hockley Heath at the last poll in 2008.

It was also third in Knowle after beating Labour, the Greens and UK Independence Party. This was the same in Silhill.

A newly formed group, the Solihull and Meriden Residents Association, is fielding 15 candidates – not 17 as pledged.

It said one was not selected due to an 'administrative error' and was standing aside to let independent Neill Watts fight Shirley East with a view to possibly working together if he is elected.

Ian Courts and Diana Holl-Allen will be looking to retain their seats for the Conservatives in Dorridge and Hockley Heath and Knowle.

Sheila Pittaway and Stuart Davis are also seeking to keep Silhill and St Alphege Tory.

At present there are 25 Conservative, 18 Lib Dem, five Labour, one BNP, one Green and one independent on the council.
