Lib Dem boss: we can win again

A LIBERAL Democrat chief said he was confident Lorely Burt would retain Solihull as candidates being their campaigns for the marginal seat.

Simon Hughes, shadow secretary for energy and climate change yesterday visited the borough, to campaign with Mrs Burt.

She won the seat from the Conservatives with just 279 votes in 2005.

In a press release, Mr Hughes said: “It is great to join Lorely and to see such a sense of excitement and warm response from the residents of Solihull.

“We are determined to have Lorely back in Parliament and I am sure Solihull will not let go of such an excellent MP now that it realises what an asset Lorely is to the constituency.”

He visited Olton, where Lib Dem councillor John Windmill fighting to retain his seat on Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, which also holds an election next month.

Mrs Burt said: “In the past five years I have tried to knock on every door in Solihull to make sure that residents know that I am here to help them and ensure their voices are heard in Westminster.”

Conservative candidate Maggie Throup said she was leading a ‘high profile and vibrant campaign’ and had welcomed Conservative Euro MP leader Timothy Kirkhope to the borough.

A spokesman said: “Maggie Throup again highlighted the Conservatives commitment to the NHS, when meeting residents in Solihull Town Centre.

“Maggie and the Conservatives are committed to give cancer patients the drugs they need, for free on the NHS.”
