West Midlands Police spoke out in a statement after the allegation was made on social networking website Facebook.
Insp Howard Lewis-Jones said: “There has been no directive stating that pubs shouldn't bear flags and certainly not suggesting that football fans shouldn't wear their shirts.
“It is nonsense. Police officers are football fans too and patriotism should be an important part of enjoying the tournament in a fun and friendly atmosphere as long as people are sensible.”
He added: “If they're not then they can expect us to be ready to deal with any incidents for the safety of all genuine football fans.”
