MP: new council must back Green Belt

MERIDEN Conservative MP Caroline Spelman has called on Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s new Lib-Lab administration commit to protecting the Green Belt.

In a press release, she said: “The change of the ruling group on Solihull Council from Conservative to a Labour/ Liberal Democrat coalition, does give me some cause for concern.

“Will the new council be as keen as the Conservatives are to protect the Green Belt?

“Rest assured, I will be doing whatever I can to avoid unnecessary encroachment into it.”

It came as the authority pledged to protect the ‘green gap’ between Solihull and Knowle.

Mrs Spelman – a member of David Cameron’s cabinet – said she welcomed the abolition of Labour-imposed plans demanding new housing.

She said: “Labour’s plans which would have meant considerable intrusion into the Green Belt. This is good news for Solihull and the surrounding area.”

This gives councils ‘the chance to scale down house-building according to local needs and the wishes of residents’ she said.

She said she was ‘disappointed’ that Labour and the Liberal Democrats had joined forces to run the council, which came after the Tories failed to retake the Solihull Parliamentary seat.

Mrs Spelman said: “I hope the new coalition appreciate that they are taking over a well-run council!”
