THE number of jobless on benefits has fallen in Solihull – but is still double that of two years ago.

In April 5,141 were claiming Job Seekers Allowance, down from 5,429 in July last year. But this was 2,518 in April 2008, months before the recession bit.
Some 2,385 of the latest jobless were from the north of borough.
Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council says it has taken a range of measures to tackle unemployment.
A recent probe by the Audit Commission watchdog said improvements were needed over ‘recruitment practices, gaps in data, the development of a systematic approach to evaluating current activity, performance management and information on value for money’.
