David Chamberlin will chair “The Future of Solihull Community Schools” at Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council on Wednesday evening.

It comes after it was announced the school is expected to get academy status under new Government forms this academic year.

It means it will be free from council control, giving it greater control over its budget and admission arrangements.

But this had led to fears that the move – offered only to top schools – will widen educational divides. Tudor Grange School is also expected to get the status.

The meeting is sponsored by the ATL, GMB, NASUWT, NUT, and UNISON unions, which oppose the plans.

Contributors are Liberal Democrat, Labour and Conservatives SMBC councillors, Cllr Norman Davies, Nick Stephens and Ken Meeson respectively and Rick Hatcher, professor of education at Birmingham City University.

A flyer says the scheme was ‘rushed through Parliament by the new Government with limited public debate’.

It says standards, governance and finance are key issues.

Audience members are asked to be at the civic suite at the council’s offices in Solihull town centre for 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
