SOLIHULL’S speed cameras will be switched off from April 1, it has been confirmed.

As previously reported on The Silhillian, a 40 per cent cut in Government cash support has thrown the future of the borough’s 27 cameras into doubt.
Now West Midlands roads chiefs have confirmed the cameras will be turned off from April 1, the BBC and The Solihull News reports. See a map of the cameras here.
It comes as Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council reports it has recorded the lowest number of people killed or seriously injured in traffic collisions.
This has fallen from 258 in 1986 to 61 in 2010, down from 88 in 2009.
A motion will be put before the council on Tuesday hitting out at the funding cut.
The motion, put forward by Labour’s David Jamieson said cameras make a “valuable contribution” to cutting deaths and injuries.
It urges members to agree they are “deeply concerned that from 31st March 2011, the Government has withdrawn the grant to the West Midlands Road Safety Partnership that enables the deployment of the cameras and fears that this could result in an increase in road casualties in Solihull”.
It “calls upon our MPs to lobby the Government to reinstate the grant to the West Midlands Road Safety Partnership that is at least equal to the amount raised in fines from those caught speeding and jumping red lights in our region”.
