The Dorridge Residents Opposed to Village Superstore made the comment in response to The Silhillian on social networking website Twitter.

The group has started a wall of support for people opposed to the Sainsbury’s plan for Forest Court and The Silhillian asked DROVS if a pro-supermarket wall would win support.

Referring to a pro-supermarket petition at The Dorridge Practice, DROVS wrote: “Yes, given that there are scores of people signing in the doctors.

“They can’t all be mentally ill!”

Twitter user Joanne Candy wrote: “Mental illness isn't something that should be made a matter of a joke!”

In a statement to The Silhillian, DROVS said: “We’re truly sorry for any offence caused by this careless Tweet which certainly does not reflect our views.

“We’ve sent an apology to a Twitter follower who contacted us to complain.

“The DROVS volunteer who sent the tweet has also donated to a charity of the individual’s choice, by way of apology.”

The tweet has now been removed.

A comment on The Silhillian said: “Their recent comment describing people who have signed the petition in the Doctors Surgery as "mentally ill" to be below the belt and wholly insulting both to supporters of the scheme and those who suffer from mental health issues.

“I can’t help but feel that this superior attitude coupled with a victim complex is doing no more to gain them sympathy from the villagers who support the scheme.”
