Leisure centres face fee hike

LEISURE centres fees will go up by an average 2.58 per cent from January 1, it has been agreed.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has backed the rise for Tudor Grange Leisure Centre and North Solihull Sports Centre.

Parkwood Leisure feels that the current economic climate, market place and increased local competition make it commercially sensible to freeze these charges.

It follows a 4.53 per cent average increase in January thisyear.

The charges are the maximum allowed under a deal between the council and Parkwood Leisure, which manages the centres.

The firm has a right in the contract to increase prices by the retail price index each year.

Solihull’s adult swim and court hire fees are higher than councils in Coventry and Warwickshire, a council report says.

It adds: “These charges are considered reasonable given the economic situation, increased competition and state of the market.”
