Knowle meetings on runway expansion

TWO consultation meetings are to be held in Knowle over the forthcoming extension to the runway at Birmingham Airport.

Staff will be at Knowle Village Hall on Monday from 10am to midday and the following Monday, January 28, from 7pm to 9pm.

The airport won planning permission from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council in 2009 and work will begin to extend the runway in April.

It plans to have new flight patterns for take offs to the north and landing from the south from December 12. The extension is set to open in spring next year.

Its consultation says the changes mean “aircraft will pass slightly closer to Hampton-in-Arden, Barston and the western part of Balsall Common but further away from Catherine-de-Barnes, Eastcote and Knowle”.

It adds: “Forecast scenarios show that overall there will be an increase in the noise impact.

“However, this is mostly attributable to growth within the forecast scenarios.

“When analysing the noise impact with and without this airspace change there is a modest increase in people affected by noise as a result of this change.”
