MP: poor stay poor in UK

Meriden MP Caroline Spelman has said: “If you are born poor in Britain today you are likely to remain poor.”

The Conservative MP said: “Social mobility is worse in Britain today than when I was born in 1958.”

Writing for the website of St Leonard’s Church, Marston Green, she said: “Today’s generation of children in this country are some of the most unhappy in the world.”

She wrote: “We live in a corrosively cynical world.

“If we read everything in the newspaper at face value we probably wouldn’t get out of bed in the mornings. The trust deficit in our society is getting worse. And politicians are the least trusted.

“I believe the answer is to be honest even when the truth is unpalatable and if the truth is painful then speak the truth with love.”
