THE recession was less severe because of the actions of the Labour Government, the party’s Meriden election hopeful has said.Ed Williams pointed to the ‘Government’s commitment to investment’.
He said: “Along with the resilience of the British people, the impact of the recession has been blunted and shortened.

“As a consequence, the rate of unemployment, business failures, and home repossessions have been significantly lower than under the Conservative recession of the 1990s, and with lower mortgage rates too.”

He said: “It is now time to decide between securing the economic recovery of this country or taking immediate cuts that could tip us back into recession.
“It's time to decide whether it is worth protecting frontline services when people need them most.”
A Conservative pledge to cut public spending is ‘too big a risk to take with our fragile recovery’ he wrote on his website.
The party came second in the 2005 poll to Conservative MP Caroline Spelman, who has held the seat since 1997.
