Wahid Mahmood responded to an advertisement in Auto Trader magazine for an Audi A4 for sale and visited the Station Road home on July 28.
But the 37-year-old stole asked the 35-year-old owner to pull over so he could ‘check omissions levels from the exhaust pipe’ police said in a press release.
Yet he said: “But as they got out of the vehicle he pushed the owner to the ground, grabbed the keys and sped away.”
The vehicle was pursued after being spotted by a number plate recognition system on the M6 motorway.
At one stage Mahmood was clocked travelling at 110mph on the hard shoulder.
He abandoned the vehicle in Prestbury Road, Aston, and was arrested following a chase by officers. The car keys were found nearby.
Mahmood, who pleaded guilty to one charge of robbery and two counts of stealing a motor vehicle, stole vehicles using similar tactics in Erdington and Shirley.
He will be sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on September 1.
