The incident happened on the northbound carriageway between junctions 4 (Shirley) and 5 (Solihull) at about 6.30am on Thursday morning.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “It is not clear exactly what happened, but when crews arrived they found a woman lying in the motorway with multiple serious injuries.

“Two lorries had blocked off the motorway which allowed ambulance staff to work safely on the motorway.

“The doctor and crew worked on the woman at the scene before taking her on blue lights to Heartlands Hospital where medics were on standby. On arrival at hospital, she was described as being in a critical condition.

“A second ambulance crew was sent to the scene to check over the driver of the lorry and anyone else at the incident but no-one else required hospital treatment.”
