A DEVELOPER is again bidding to build a major hotel in Solihull town centre after plans were refused last year.P WIN Properties (Solihull) Ltd has submitted a planning application for a 112-bed hotel at the rear of shops in Station Road, by Lode Lane multi-storey car park.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council threw out a 123-bedroom plan in January last year, saying it was ‘stark, incongruous and alien’.
The developer appealed to the national planning inspectorate but lost on grounds of its appearance and affect on the roads.
But the firm said the new plan is two storeys shorter and has is ‘little to no impact of the new proposal on the character of the conservation area’.

Yet one resident has already objected on the council’s website to the scheme, to go on parking spaces at the back of shops on Station Road.
They wrote: “Since the arrival of Touchwood the local infrastructure is already gridlocked with the vast amount of traffic. There are queues everywhere.”
The building would ‘dominate the skyline’ and be an ‘eyesore’.
They said: “I am aware that there are already multi-storey car parks in the vicinity but this does not mean that we want all surrounding buildings to be of a similar height.”
The town does not need more hotels as it has the Holiday Inn and Ramada George they wrote.
Yet the firm said: “The hotel has minimal conflict with existing residential uses and compliments existing business and commercial uses in Station Road adding to, and supporting, the existing infrastructure of the town centre.”
It said it was a ‘attractive, distinctive and vibrant addition to the rich mix of
architectural buildings in the town centre’.
And it questioned the usability of the service road which runs between the car park and the proposed hotel. This would be used as access for the hotel.
It said it ‘does not support pedestrian activity with pavements’ and said: “This area is best described as semi-public.”
Extra traffic would be ‘modest’ as just 24 parking spaces would be provided. Three would be kept for existing tenants.
